Common Mistake
The elbow is excessively coming out to the side (laterally) during a clean. This position with the elbow out to the side can put stress on the lateral deltoid and is not a good position for scooping up the weight.

Solution
Pull the elbow back and think about shaving the ribs. Although you don’t literally need or can touch the ribs with your arm it’s a good cue to understand how the arm should move back rather than laterally.
Description
This issue can be identified during a clean when the elbow comes out and away laterally from the body. It’s most common in a dead or hang clean.
